Non-Income Generating ProjectsIncome Generating Projects

The main objective of KLC is to empower the Mpoma Community to enable Nkosi to achieve financial self-sufficiency by 2013. Once funding has been obtained, this objective will be achieved by mobilizing an already motivated community to implement several income generating projects. It is our opinion that the successful completion of these projects will generate sufficient income to cover Nkosi’s operational costs.

A Strategic Plan was developed which outlines how Nkosi can achieve the objective of financial self-sufficiency. It identifies income generating projects that will require significant donor funding, training projects necessary to educate members of the community in order to execute their responsibilities effectively, and non-income generating projects which will improve the quality of life of the children.

Non-Income Generating Projects

Training for Mpoma Community Members
It is suggested that $500 be allocated to each of the five committees of the Mpoma Community Initiative for training specific to their tasks. These trainings will prepare the community and staff of the school to expedite their tasks in an efficient and knowledgeable manner.
It is also our opinion that the community members will use their new skills to produce more income for their own families. As a result, they will be able to consistently pay their school fees, thereby increasing revenues for Nkosi so it can accommodate more OVCs.
The cost: $2,500

Cook
Currently, the teachers and students prepare the food for the Nkosi School. The addition of a cook will allow for more nutritious, balanced meals, and free teachers to spend more time with students, many of whom are orphans, traumatized by the loss of a parent or suffering from sickness.
The cost: $1,500 per year

Hiring of Full-Time Registered Nurse
A full-time nurse will relieve untrained Nkosi staff from providing medical care. Further, the nurse would conduct health and wellness training at the school as well as providing outreach home visits to households within the community. The nurse would be paid $200 per month and require additional $1,000 for needed medicines and supplies.
The cost: $3,400 per year

Mattresses, Bedding and Mosquito Nets for Holiday Break
During the course of the year the school is closed for a total of three months. The head mistress, Sarah, and her husband provide housing and food at their farm for 35 children who have no other home to which they can go during the Holidays. As the home is very overcrowded, it would improve the living conditions if each child had a mattress with bedding and mosquito net on which to sleep as they currently sleep on the floor.
The cost: $1,500

Solar Power
The Ugandan power grid is notoriously unreliable, leaving the school without electrical power frequently. When the power is out the children must cross the busy highway to retrieve water because the water pump to their borehole is run by electricity. This is very dangerous for the children. The implementation of solar power would eliminate the school’s reliance on the Ugandan grid, providing a safer option for the children and also decreasing the use of expensive firewood and charcoal.
The cost: $10-12,000

Biogas System at Nkosi
This system utilizes animal waste for heating and cooking needs instead of costly firewood. Nkosi would partner with the Heifer Project, which would provide nearly all materials and training to construct the system. Nkosi’s portion of the cost would be $500.

Refurbishing of the Classrooms
The cost : $5,000
